Hideaway (2023)

Hideaway, 2023, coloured pencils and watercolour, approximately 12 by 19 inches

Hideaway was inspired by a tender photo of my sister and I as children, holding hands back in our hometown. Looking back on this photo made me realize I would not have remembered this moment if it were not for this memorialized image. Hideaway constructs a portal of sorts for the two figures to venture into. Despite the eeriness of the dark passageway, the care shown between the two figures set out to relay there can be peace in the unknown. The young girls and pathway are rendered realistically in coloured pencils, whereas The forest is rendered looser, with watercolour to demonstrate the haziness of memory. Dozens of pins precariously attach each collaged component, as if to pin down these fleeting fragments of memory.
